While some states across the country have implemented policies that limit the use of certain types of plastic pollution, there has been no nationwide policy enacted that limits the United States' contribution to global plastic pollution. But in February 2020, Congressman Lowenthal and Senator Udall introduced comprehensive plastic pollution legislation that would address every angle of the plastic pollution problem in the United States.

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2020 will establish extended producer responsibility laws, that would require the creators of plastic products to fund and oversee the collection and proper disposal of their products even after they have been sold. The act would also create a nationwide container deposit law that would allow consumers to return certain food and beverage containers for a small deposit to encourage the collection and proper disposal. Most importantly, however, the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act would entirely phase out the use of several single-use plastic items that are impossible to recycle and have readily available sustainable alternatives.

Some politicians in Argentina have recently considered creating new legal definitions for plastic waste that would make it easier for recycling facility operators in the country to import more plastic waste from around the world. China once imported a vast amount of the world's plastic waste in the same way until it decided in 2018 that it was not worth the environmental damage it was wreaking on the country. Now the world wants to ship its plastic waste to Argentina, where it will clog rivers and beaches, harm wildlife, and threaten human health. We cannot allow this to happen.
