Mauritania was the first African country to ban plastic bags.
Currently, only 9% of plastic all plastic consumed is being recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills or the environment. Plastic’s chemical composition makes it unable to fully decompose, causing pollution to build up and creating problems for our planet and human health. If we keep using plastic at this rate, our planet will suffer.
While Mauritania has done excellent work in getting rid of excessive plastic usage, the most impactful pieces of plastic regulating policy have taken place at the international level. The Basel Convention was passed in 2018 and mandated that ratifying countries could not export plastic waste to other countries without the informed consent of the importing country on the contamination and quality of the waste to be imported. We need similar actions and policies enacted on the international level, but we shouldn't limit ourselves to limiting the ways plastic is disposed of.
We need an international treaty regulating how much plastic can be produced in the first place. Some products have no viable method of recycling and are known to end up in the environment at higher levels, instead, these products need to be phased out entirely from our global use. We know the production of certain materials has been banned on a global scale before, specifically materials that are known to cause irreversible harm to human health and the environment have been restricted. Plastic is known to kill and harm wildlife around the world. By signing this petition, let your government know that you believe we need a global approach to this issue and to support an international treaty that places further restrictions on plastic usage and disposal.
