Canada Plastic Petition

2.8 million tonnes -equivalent to the weight of 24 CN towers- of plastic waste ends up in Canadian landfills every year.

Plastic pollution has increased over the last 30 years and now presents as a global problem that requires collective action to solve. Plastic has become so abundant it is constantly all around us — in our homes, schools, workplaces, and even our natural spaces.

Currently, only 9% of plastic all plastic consumed is being recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills or the environment. Plastic’s chemical composition makes it unable to fully decompose, causing pollution to build up and creating problems for our planet and human health. If we keep using plastic at this rate, our planet will suffer.

Canada only recycles 9% of the 3.2 million tonnes of plastic it uses every year, with the rest ending up in landfills. Plastic that ends up in landfills breaks down over time into microplastics and chemicals that can leach into the surrounding environments, contaminating our soil, water supply, and even our air. Preventing continued use of plastics and their breakdown into these microplastics is essential by cutting down on overall usage and telling your government you want more strict bans on plastic production and increased investment in recycling technology. Sign below to petition your government to take strides in decreasing plastic pollution by implementing plastic bans as well as investing in technology that improves recycling efforts!
