Petition for Better Air Quality in Turkey

Turkey has committed to increase its renewable energy capacity in the country by 2030.

The air we breathe is vital for the health of humans, animals, and the plants we share the earth with. In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in particulates, chemicals, and harmful gases in our atmosphere, contributing to health issues, and millions of premature deaths worldwide. Not only is poor air quality bad for humans, but it is also linked to climate change and biodiversity loss.

One way to measure air quality is through fine particulate matter called PM2.5. These tiny particles enter the air from many human and natural sources, such as dust and vehicle exhaust, and can make the air appear hazy when at high levels. Particles can travel vast distances, meaning air pollution caused in one place may transcend borders to impact people in another region altogether. The decline in clean air is a threat to human health, the environment, greater economic prosperity, and society.

By burning fossil fuels for energy, including coal, oil and natural gas, Turkey contributes greatly to air pollution. Pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter contaminate the environment by contributing to acid rain and hurt human health by increasing the likelihood of chronic illnesses, hospitalization and mortality. Clean air is essential to a safe livelihood and a healthy environment. Let your government know that it must transition from coal and other dirty energy sources to clean and renewable energy in order to guarantee a healthy future for Turkey.
